Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks 1

Leaving New Bern, SC we had about a 6 hour drive ahead of us to Hatteras located on the Outer Banks off the coast of North Carolina. Along the way we passed tobacco fields and peanut fields. The first half of the drive was pretty normal until we hit the coast. Then it was nothing but two lane roads, a lot of water and a lot of bridges.

Arriving at our campsite we found ourselves in amongst a lot of people. The first thing we set about doing was setting up the tent. That was an adventure and tested our patience as a family. The wind was blowing quite hard which made it a little difficult to set up and then there was a difference in opinion in location. Eventually we persevered and the tent was up and everything was inside. Then we realized we were going to need to add some extra rope to stabilize a couple of poles against the wind. Once that was done, we upgraded to a sight right next door which provided a bit more cover from the hot sun, so we preceded to move the tent (with everything in it) over one site and re-anchor two other poles as we had changed sides that faced the wind. I am happy to report that after all that, we still made it to the beach as one happy unit!

The water is a little cooler than the Gulf of Mexico and the waves are much bigger. The kids enjoyed using their small body boards and finding friends to play with in the water and in the sand. Tracey and I spent time getting some sun and cooling off in the water once it got to hot on the sand. After time at the beach it was back to our site for dinner. Tacos were on the menu the first night. After eating dinner it was off to explore the pool. After all, can’t be somewhere with a pool and not take advantage of it!

After time at the pool it was time to turn in and see about getting a good night’s sleep.
