Prior to arriving in Cameron we spent 3 days, 2 nights in
Mackinaw City with a day trip to explore Mackinac Island. Here are some of the highlights from that stretch of the trip.
Mackinaw City is located at the northern tip of Michigan. Touristy place, lots of gift shops and food places. We stayed at the KOA with friends from Kentucky. We normally stay with them at their home during our trips but they were going to be on vacation so we thought we would just meet up with them. It was great to catch up and explore the area with them!

Camp dinners were raised to a new level - no hot dogs at this campsite! |
|
Marshmallows and Starbursts were roasted! Yes, I did say Starbursts. |
|
Tents up and ready to go. The one on the far right for the "teenage" girls. Something about needing space and catching up.

Mackinac Island is quite the place. The island is only accessible by ferry and there are no cars on the island. You can bring your bikes or rent bikes on the island to help you get around. It is an 8.2 mile ride around the island and also provides many other roads and trails to ride and hike. You can also get around on a horse drawn carriage/wagon. As you are riding around taking in the views, wagons are making deliveries around the island. When you first hit the main road, it's like a traffic jam with no cars. Bikes and wagons everywhere! There are also plenty of opportunities to pick up something from the gift shops. We really enjoyed our time on the bikes taking in the views and slowling down a bit for the day!

The main road after getting off the ferry. Notice the bikes parked along side the street and not a car in sight! |

We had an absolute gorgeous day for a ride around the island |

The other way to get around the island |
We left Mackinac around 10:30 am on the 21st and headed towards Cameron. It was about a 7 hour drive which we have grown used to on this trip. We drove through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan along the lake before passing across the border into WI. We arrived at our destination around 5:30 pm, just in time for dinner.
The next week will provide time for connecting with friends and family as well as a reset before heading back to WA. More on that to come!
