Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks 2

The wind continued to blow all night. I am glad to report that our tent stayed upright throughout the night. The set my alarm for 5:00 am and managed to roll out of bed around 5:30. I had the privilege of taking in a sun rise over the Atlantic. It was both beautiful and humbling. Sitting there I realized that I have now been able to see the sun rise over the Atlantic and see it set over the Pacific.  I also took advantage of an early morning to get a run on the beach, stunning scenery.

Once everyone was up and dressed we loaded up the car to go and visit the lighthouse. Incredible to learn about the original lighthouse and the one that currently exists. The current one has been moved once due to eroding shorelines. Fascinating to learn about how they were able to move it to a new location inland a bit. We also learned how the Outer Banks are changing over time due to the winds and shifting sands.

After returning from our visit to the lighthouse we had a little lunch and then off to the beach for more time in the water. The afternoon followed the same routine as the day before. Except that we lost two pair of goggles in the water. The kids won most of the battles with the waves that day but the waves definitely won two of them. We were hoping they would wash ashore but they never did.

After dinner it was back to the pool for a little more swimming and some ice cream from the shop that was located at the pool. When we returned to our site after pool time, our “neighbors” from Montreal invited us to the beach for a fire and marshmallow roasting. For all the times we have camped close to the beach doing something like this never dawned on us and it comes to find out that it was free and easy to obtain a license to do it. It was a beautiful night on the beach under the starts and to wrap up our time on the Outer Banks at Hatteras.

If you ever get the chance to go, we highly recommend it!

After leaving the island we headed north towards Pennsylvania to spend the night with friends. I believe we ended up spending about $20 in tolls, the largest being to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. Looking forward to a night indoors before continuing on!
